LIRR completes $20.5 million rehab of Massapequa Station

MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) late last week reopened its Massapequa Station following a $20.5 million repair project.

LIRR President Patrick Nowakowski joined local elected officials, community leaders and commuters for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the station.

"That was no easy task, but the station never closed," Nowakowski said in a statement. "Our goals were to maintain service while bringing this project in on-time and on-budget. We accomplished all three and the result is that Massapequa has a train station it can be proud of."

Funded by MTA's Capital Plan and launched in spring 2013, the rehab project called for the replacement of the station's 12-car elevated platform, canopy, platform waiting room, staircases, elevator and escalator. Crews also replaced lighting, the public address system and signage, in addition to installing a station-wide video security system.

The project is the most significant investment by LIRR since the station was raised from street level in 1953, agency officials said.
