The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) last week opened the newly renovated Carle Place Station, the first station to be upgraded as part of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Expansion Project .
Improvements to the station included a new third track, platform canopies, new benches and bike racks, CCTV security cameras, ADA-compliant ramps and elevators, a new pedestrian overpass, free Wi-Fi, USB charging stations and new electronic information displays.
The station was built in 1837 and refurbished in 1990. It serves more than 900 weekday riders on the LIRR Main Line and Port Jefferson Branch, MTA officials said in a press release.
Upgrading the station is "crucial" to accommodating future ridership growth on the Main Line, they said.
The station currently accommodates 12 train cars. The LIRR Expansion Project will add a third track from Floral Park to Hicksville to help reduce train congestion and delays and enabling bi-directional service during peak hours.
