LIRR completes Smithtown Station renovation

MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) yesterday opened its newly renovated Smithtown Station to the public.

The latest construction project completed under the railroad’s state-of-good-repair program, the station renovations included eliminating an old ticket office to make way for two full-size restrooms, LIRR officials said in a press release.

In addition, crews installed new flooring that features radiant heat, finished off the waiting room with oak wainscoting and crownmolding, and built new doors and windows.

"Having dedicated staffers who are skilled masons, carpenters, plumbers and electricians enables the railroad to handle many small and mid-size renovations projects faster and less expensively than it would if we went with outside contractors," said LIRR President Patrick Nowakowski.

The station's exterior siding at the front of the building was also replaced and a damaged mural on the north side was restored.

Crews from LIRR's building and bridges division began work on the station last year.
