The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) last week announced that construction of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Expansion Project has hit the halfway point.

The $2.6 billion project will introduce 10 miles of new track between Floral Park and Hicksville, New York.

Four of eight railroad crossings have been eliminated, six of seven bridges have been rebuilt or upgraded, and five stations have been rebuilt, MTA officials said in a press release.

The project is ahead of schedule and under budget, MTA officials said.

This month, the eastern portions of the Merillon Avenue Station platforms in Garden City, will open to commuters  and temporary station platforms will be demolished.

MTA’s Construction and Development agency is working to complete the School Street undergrade crossing in November, months before originally scheduled.
