LIRR modernization reaches one-third completion mark

The MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) ended 2019 having completed almost two dozen construction projects as part of its program to rebuild the commuter railroad in New York.

The program included 14 stations enhancements, including upgrades to LED lighting, USB charging port, Wi-Fi, interactive digital kiosks, wayfinding signage and accessibility upgrades at Baldwin, Bayside, Bellmore, Brentwood, Deer Park, East Hampton, Farmingdale, Great Neck, Merrick, Northport, Port Jefferson, Stewart, Syosset and Valley Steam stations, LIRR officials said in a press release.

LIRR crews also replaced Cherry Lane Bridge in North Hempstead, Nassau Boulevard Bridge in Garden City, the Accabonac Road and North Main Street bridges in East Hampton, and South Tyson Avenue Bridge in Floral Park. The Flushing Main Street Bridge also was rehabilitated.

In addition, crews eliminated two grade crossings at Covert Avenue in New Hyde Park and Urban Avenue in North Hempstead; replaced and relocated the Port Washington substation; and installed and upgraded a switch in Nassau to prepare for the a future third track between Floral park and Hicksville.

“The LIRR expansion project is moving forward at a remarkable pace,” MTA Chief Development Officer Janno Lieber said, noting the project also is under budget.
