LIRR opens new bridge as part of Jamaica Station rehab project

Last week, MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) opened part of a new westerly bridge at Jamaica Station. The bridge will replace an 80-year-old structure that LIRR plans to demolish.

The wider, higher bridge — designed to enable passengers to access all station platforms — includes two sets of staircases to each platform. Half of the bridge is open; work is continuing on the other half.

The bridge replacement is part of LIRR’s $226 million Jamaica Station rehabilitation project, which also includes opening a new overhead portal mezzanine to link all Jamaica Station platforms, and provide direct access to the MTA New York City Transit subway system and AirTrain JFK facilities. Scheduled to open in July, the portal replaces the existing under-platform mezzanine. Work is under way on all Jamaica platforms and canopies.
