MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) has opened newly renovated Farmingdale and Wantagh stations.

Although work on the Farmingdale Station is ongoing, doors to the building were opened yesterday. The facility's upgrade is part of an $84 million, eight-station renovation package awarded earlier this year.

Recently, LIRR also completed a $27 million renovation of the Wantagh Station, which included platform replacements, a newly installed elevator and other amenities.

Both projects are part of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's $6.6 billion modernization program's investment into LIRR.

"Some LIRR stations can be more than 160 years old. While we always want to celebrate and preserve our history, it’s about time we bring LIRR stations into the 21st century," Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chief Development Officer Janno Lieber said in a press release.

Built in 1890, Farmingdale Station is located along the Ronkonkoma Branch in Suffolk County, New York. Its facade was fully restored to its original historical brick architecture, LIRR officials said.

Other improvements include a new waiting room; redone restrooms to meet ADA compliance; windows, doors, electrical, plumbing and HVAC upgrades; new wayfinding components; and installation of new CCTV cameras.

Built in 1867, Wantagh Station is located along LIRR's Babylon Branch.
