Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) recently was recognized for safety achievements by parent New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (NY MTA).

LIRR received an award for "Sustained Achievement in Safety" at NY MTA’s annual Chairman’s Safety Awards. The award is presented to the agency that best demonstrates continuous improvement in employee safety during the previous five years.

LIRR’s workplace accidents have dropped the past 12 years.

LIRR’s buildings and bridges department also received an award for "Outstanding Group Achievement in Safety," which recognizes a group’s dedication and effort to safe practices in all job aspects, according to a prepared statement.

In 2002, the department’s safety program helped reduce workplace accidents 55 percent and vehicular accidents, 90 percent. Under the program, department employees are encouraged to identify and document potential safety hazards. Last year, supervisors investigated more than 2,000 potential hazards.
