MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) crews today began the final stage of work to replace two century-old rail bridges in East Hampton, New York, at North Main Street and Accabonac Road.

LIRR will raise the vertical roadway clearance of the bridges with the installation of single span steel bridge structures to allow trucks to safely pass underneath the bridges.

The North Main Street Bridge currently has a posted clearance of 10 feet, and the Accabonac Road Bridge has a posted clearance of 9-feet-9-inches. The low-hanging bridges have been the site of many accidents caused by oversized trucks striking the bridges, LIRR officials said in a press release.

Buses will substitute train service during construction.
