Rail News: Passenger Rail
MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) plans to apply for a Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) waiver to use a train horn that sounds at lower-than-required decibels.
The mayor of Cedarhurst, N.Y., and a state representative recently asked the railroad to investigate different horn types. As a result, LIRR developed a modified horn for its M7 electric trains that lowers sound levels up to three decibels. The agency tested the horn at the Cedarhurst Station and plans to conduct additional tests at grade crossings throughout the system.
LIRR officials plan to submit test data along with its waiver application to the FRA.
