Yesterday, New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced that MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) President Helena Williams will serve as interim executive director and chief executive officer, pending board approval on May 27. She will assume the responsibilities of Elliot Sander, who resigned as eecutive director and CEO earlier this month to enable New York Gov. David Paterson to "take the authority in a different direction," Sander said at the time.
Williams will serve in the MTA's top post until Paterson nominates and the state Senate confirms a new CEO. She will retain her title and responsibilities as LIRR president.
Williams became LIRR's president in June 2007 after serving stints as deputy county executive for Nassau County and senior counsel for Cablevision. She previously served as president of Long Island Bus between 1993 and 1998.
