Today, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is scheduled to join Utah Transit Authority (UTA), Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake and state officials to mark the start of construction of the Sugar House Streetcar project.
The project calls for building a two-mile, seven-station modern streetcar line that will run from a TRAX station to the Sugar House commercial district, UTA officials said in a prepared statement.
The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the project a $26 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery II (TIGER II) grant. The remainder of the $55 million project will be funded by UTA and the cities of Salt Lake City and South Salt Lake.
Upon completion, the line will connect to more than 130 miles of track across the Wasatch Front, UTA officials said.
