MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) President James Dermody plans to retire Sept. 1, according to the American Public Transportation Association’s Passenger Transport.

Since beginning his LIRR career in 1958 as a ticket clerk, Dermody has primarily served in the Transportation Department. He supervised train-dispatching operations, and held stints as general manager of customer quality and service planning, general manager-new fleet procurement, chief transportation officer and senior vice president of operations.

After assuming LIRR’s top post in 2003, Dermody oversaw the acquisition of the new M-7 electric car fleet and rebuilding of Jamaica Station into an intermodal hub.
