New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced yesterday the opening of the new Elmont Station on the MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), the railroad's first new station in nearly 50 years.

Elmont Station will be open for business as of Nov. 20, and will offer eastbound service to UBS Arena, home of National Hockey League team New York Islanders, as well as Belmont Park, which has its own dedicated station. The station will feature two 12-car-long platforms with canopies, ADA-compliant elevators, a pedestrian overpass, USB charging stations, Wi-Fi and digital information signage. The platforms also include a state-of-the-art snowing melting system, Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) officials said in a press release.

A westbound platform is set to open in summer 2022, at which point LIRR officials expect service to increase to full-time and year-round. The station will reduce travel times for the local community and increase event attendee numbers while alleviating congestion on Long Island roads.
