Los Angeles MTA to solicit public comments on unmet transit needs

This week, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA MTA) plans to host public hearings in Santa Clarita Valley, Palmdale and Lancaster, Calif., to receive comments on the area’s transportation needs.

LA MTA conducts annual hearings to determine if transit needs exist in the cities, which currently are not served by the authority.

As part of the Transportation Development Act of 1971 — which requires that one-fourth of the 6 percent sales tax collected in Los Angeles County be used for public transportation — a share of the authority’s sales tax revenue must be allocated to areas that are not served by public transportation. If there is no legitimate need for transit service in the area, the revenue can be used for street improvements, according to a prepared statement.
