Los Angeles transit agency begins utility work for Westside Subway Extension

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) began utility relocation work in the city's Mid-Wilshire district on Tuesday, marking the start of the Westside Subway Extension project.
Utility crews began relocating existing underground telecommunication lines on Wilshire Boulevard between La Brea Avenue and Detroit Street, where a future subway station will be located, LACMTA officials said in a prepared statement.
The work is a required precursor to the future construction of the subway that eventually will extend the Metro Purple Line nine miles and serve key destinations on the Westside.
The utility work is part of LACMTA's pre-construction activity that also will include securing a construction contractor, acquiring real estate, conducting field testing and continuing community outreach.
