Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority's (MARTA) board late last week adopted a $415.6 million operations budget and $470.1 million capital budget for fiscal-year 2015.

Budget highlights include no fare increase and a 19 percent increase in rail service hours. Due to budget constraints, the capital improvement program for the year will focus primarily on MARTA's "safety, security and regulatory requirements," according to a budget statement posted on the agency's website.

"MARTA has accomplished a tremendous amount in 2014, and we are confident we can continue in this vein," said MARTA Chairman Robert Ashe. "The agency has weathered and overcome several economic challenges in recent years, and we are pleased with our fiscal outlook."

The new budget goes into effect July 1. To learn more about MARTA's efforts to recover from financial and other challenges, read the cover story in Progressive Railroading's May issue.
