Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority’s (MARTA) board recently awarded ALSTOM a $127 million contract to overhaul 120 rapid transit cars, with an option to overhaul up to 118 additional cars.
The overhauls should extend the life of the cars, which were built between 1985 and 1988, by 15 to 20 years, according to a prepared statement.
The contract option, valued at $139 million, covers cars built by ALSTOM between 1979 and 1981.
The overhauls will be carried out at ALSTOM's Hornell, N.Y., facilities. Deliveries are scheduled to begin at the end of 2004, at a rate of up to eight cars per month.
