The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) will begin requiring weekly COVID-19 testing for unvaccinated employees beginning Oct. 4.

Vaccinated employees must submit or upload a copy of their vaccination card to avoid weekly testing, agency officials said in a news release. Almost half of MARTA's employees are fully vaccinated.

An online and in-person survey conducted by the agency revealed most vaccinated employees work at headquarters and at rail yards, with bus garage workers having the lowest vaccination rate.

MARTA will offer on-site COVID testing and vaccines for one month at headquarters and bus garages. The agency previously partnered with CVS and the Urban League to provide onsite vaccination services at its headquarters.

Other large transit agencies including the Metropolitan Transit Authority in New York City, Chicago Transit Authority and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority have implemented similar testing requirements for unvaccinated workers.
