Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Fiscal and Management Control Board approved a plan earlier this week to raise fares by an average 5.8 percent effective July 1.
Revenue generated by the fare increase will enable MBTA to continue funding improvement projects as well as invest in bus services, MBTA officials said in a press release.
The agency hasn't increased fares since 2016.
The board also voted not to consider additional fare increases for at least thee years, to make the $10 weekend commuter-rail fare permanent and expand eligibility criteria for the youth pass.
