The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) last week began construction on a $37.7 million project to relocate the commuter-rail station in Chelsea, Massachusetts.
The Chelsea station will be demolished and rebuilt about 1,800 feet west of its current Arlington Street location in order to be next to the Sliver Line 3 (SL3) bus stop. The new location and updated station design will improve multimodal options and increase accessibility for person with disabilities, MBTA officials said in a press release.
The new station, which serves Newburyport/Rockport Line, will feature high-level platforms, sidewalks, ramps, stairways, lighting, signage, benches, canopies and windscreens. It will open in 2021.
During construction, MBTA crews and contractors will demolish the existing station, upgrade rail signaling systems and traffic crossings, make improvements to traffic signals at three intersections that cross the Silver Line busway, and improve transit signal priority for the SL3 in Chelsea.
The project is part of a five-year, $8 billion capital investment program.
