The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) recently exercised a final contract option with the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Co. to operate the authority’s commuter-rail system until July 1, 2013. In 2012, MBTA plans to begin a procurement process to seek a new operator.
The authority also announced plans to institute a series of operational improvements aimed at enhancing the “rider experience.” The improvements include real-time passenger information systems, which will be installed on all 13 commuter-rail lines by mid-February to provide passengers more accurate “next train” arrival information.
In addition, MBTA and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation plan to expand WiFi service on the commuter-rail system by summer’s end. The authority’s 410 coaches will be outfitted with the technology.
MBTA also plans to launch a communications system designed to provide passengers real-time train information on their personal radios. By month’s end, the system will be available at the Anderson Regional Transportation Center in Woburn. Later, the systems will be installed at all commuter-rail stations that offer 50 or more parking spaces.
