MBTA makes switch to six-car Blue Line trains

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) recently expanded trains on the Blue Line from four cars to six to accommodate more passengers.

Currently, 12 six-car trains operate four to five minutes apart during peak commuting periods and seven to eight minutes apart during off-peak periods. The six-car trains increase rider capacity by 50 percent, according to MBTA. In September, the Blue Line’s on-time performance rate reached 95 percent — the highest rate in 18 months.

Federal, state and local officials are working on a plan to extend the Blue Line from Wonderland Station in Revere to downtown Lynn. Several studies have been completed to date.
