The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority yesterday awarded a construction contract to Barletta Heavy Division Inc. for the Codman Yard expansion and improvements project, a piece of the overall Red Line transformation program.

Now that a contractor has been chosen, construction will begin later this year and is expected to be completed by fall 2025, MBTA officials said in a press release.

The project calls for expanding and upgrading the yard by replacing the existing tracks and building six new storage tracks, allowing the yard to hold more than 100 rail cars. Currently, there's room for only 70 rail cars.

Also, crews will replace the Ashmont double crossover, inspection pit, vehicle wash, lighting and power to make the yard fully functional.

"As this project progresses, our team will be able to bring much-needed improvements to the Red Line as quickly as possible,” said MBTA Chief of Capital Transformation Angel Pena. “The upgrades to Codman Yard will benefit all Red Line riders.”
