MBTA native son takes the helm
advertisement
Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s board late last month unanimously selected Michael Mulhern to take over as general manager, succeeding Robert Prince Jr., who resigned in November.
And Mulhern’s no stranger to the city, system or agency.
A native Bostonian, Mulhern rode MBTA’s streetcars, buses and subway throughout his childhood. After high school, he began working for the agency as a track laborer, then later moved on to bus driver and motorperson.
During his 23-year MBTA career, Mulhern served as dispatcher, subway line chief, director of subway operations, chief operating officer and deputy general manager. Along the way, he’s earned degrees in civil engineering and construction management, and a master’s degree in public administration.
For the past two years, Mulhern’s been an adjunct professor at Suffolk University, teaching transportation and public policy.
