Today, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) will begin providing real-time train arrival information on the Fitchburg commuter-rail line.
The agency recently installed global positioning system equipment on the line to provide riders a six-minute countdown to the next train via electronic message boards. Passengers onboard trains also will hear automated announcements about an upcoming station.
In addition, MBTA is introducing real-time train arrival information on the North Leominster commuter-rail line via AM radio. Commuters can tune in an AM station to hear the same six-minute countdown provided on station platforms.
Twelve of MBTA’s 13 commuter-rail lines now offer train arrival information via radio. The agency plans to introduce the service on the Haverhill line soon; equipment installation will continue over the next several months.
