The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) will receive a $1 million federal grant to make improvements to the North Wilmington Station on the Haverhill commuter-rail line.

Provided through the Federal Highway Administration’s Commuter Authority Rail Safety Improvement program for crossing-related projects, the grant will enable MBTA to relocate and reconstruct the station’s existing commuter-rail platform along an area of single track adjacent to Route 62.

This reconstruction will result in a new boarding area that is complaint with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and ensure that trains no longer block the crossing area near the station during stops, MBTA officials said in a press release.

The MBTA collaborated with its operating partner, Keolis Commuter Services, on station design and configuration, and to develop and submit the application for the federal grant.
