MBTA to expand 'Quiet Car,' update 'Rail Radio' service

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Co. (MBCR) recently announced plans to expand the “Quiet Car” pilot program to all commuter-rail lines on a permanent basis.
After a 90-day trial period on the Fitchburg and Franklin lines earlier this year, riders gave the Quiet Car concept positive reviews, agency officials said in a prepared statement.
The service will be available during peak hours only, and in the car closest to the locomotive. The quiet-car concept requires riders to refrain from using cell phones and other noisy electronic devices.
Also, MBTA and MBCR have launched an updated version of Rail Radio, which provides real-time information about train status on car radios. The new version integrates the service with commuter railroad’s Passenger Train Information System, which links real-time information from approaching rains to LED monitors at stations.
