MBTA to help tailor industry-wide transit system environmental standards

Federal Transit Administration (FTA) recently selected Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to help develop industry-wide standards for sound environmental policies.

Authority officials will work with industry professionals to tailor environmental practices and procedures to the specific needs of transit systems.

For participating in the project, MBTA will receive federally sponsored training and technical assistance, including workshops, on-site technical support visits, electronic materials and consultation, according to a prepared statement.

The federal support would help the authority develop its Environmental Management System, which aims to enhance the region’s quality of life by making transit services more environmentally responsible. MBTA has purchased low-emission buses and expects to relocate maintenance facilities from urban neighborhoods to industrial locations.

MBTA is one of 10 nationwide transportation agencies helping FTA develop the policies.
