MBTA to implement new train information system
advertisement
Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) passengers soon will have access to real-time train status information through "next train" technology.
The agency currently is testing an automated Passenger and Train Information System designed to precisely locate each train via a Globlal Positioning System, calculate train arrival times down to the minute and post them on LED signs at all stations. The system also can announce approaches to and arrivals at individual stations via train public-address systems, and provide visual displays for train dispatchers and operations personnel showing real-time train locations throughout the system.
In addition, MBTA will install about 25 additional signs at 12 commuter-rail stations and replace 110 outdated LED signs.
