MBTA to test late-night service on weekends

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) plans to launch late-night subway, light-rail and bus service on weekends under a one-year pilot program starting in spring 2014, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick announced yesterday.

The program was created in response to feedback from the public and business community, which encouraged the MBTA to increase late-night service as a way to boost the region's economy, as well as provide affordable transportation to employees working late-night shifts, Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) officials said in the agency's blog posted yesterday.

Beginning next year, service on all subway and light rail lines, and 15 key bus routes will operate until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturdays. Hours will not be extended for commuter-rail or ferry services, MassDOT's blog stated.

"Extending service on weekend evenings will allow the public to enjoy the many attractions and restaurants the region has to offer and give workers a more cost-effective option for getting home late at night," Patrick said in a prepared statement.
