The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is upgrading its Wellington Yard and Maintenance Facility, which handles maintenance for the Orange Line.

The upgrades are expected to improve service reliability and frequency. Six additional storage tracks will accommodate the expanded line fleet. The yard has not received major renovations since the 1970s, MBTA officials said in a press release.

Crews are installing modern fixtures and equipment as well as replacing 4 miles of track and 55 units of special trackwork.

The yard renovations are 92% completed, while the maintenance facility renovations are 86% completed. Completion is anticipated in June 2024, but the Capital Transformation team is currently reviewing ways to accelerate construction, MBTA officials said.

The project is part of the transit agency's Orange Line Transformation program, a component of the overall Capital Transformation program. The Wellington facility is the only yard on the Orange Line.
