The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) weekday ridership rose 5 percent in March, logging the biggest month-over-month increase since October 2008, MBTA officials said in a prepared statement.

Known as the T, greater Boston’s subway system reported a total 1.3 million unlinked passenger trips per weekday in March.

Ridership increased 7 percent on the Red, Orange and Blue heavy-rail lines, and 7.7 percent on the Green Line and Mattapan Trolley light-rail systems. On March 19, additional three-car train trips were added weekdays on the Green Line.

MBTA ridership has grown in six of the nine months since July 2010, officials said.

They attributed ridership growth to rising fuel prices, modest economic growth and recently improved on-time performance.
