MTA Metro-North Railroad this month marked its 40th year in business.
The commuter railroad has "made dramatic advances in service, safety and accessibility" since its founding in 1983, Metro-North officials said in a press release. The railroad logged 86.6 million trips in 2019, an annual record.
Metro-North currently serves riders throughout New York and Connecticut on its Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines, including the Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines.
Post-pandemic ridership recovery currently sits at 65% to 70% of pre-pandemic rider averages. Metro-North officials hope ridership will be back to pre-pandemic levels by its 50th anniversary, said Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi.
Over the years, Metro-North has acquired more than 800 modern rail cars and brought service to seven new stations.
Several expansion projects are underway, including the rehabilitation of the Grand Central Terminal Train Shed, which supports the Park Avenue tunnel; rebuilding of the Park Avenue Viaduct, which carries all trains in and out of Manhattan; and completion of the Penn Station Access Project, which will create a second Manhattan-bound route to serve four new stations in the East Bronx and provide direct service to Penn Station on the New Haven Line.
