MTA Metro-North to test smartphone ticketing
advertisement
MTA Metro-North Railroad will work with transit mobile ticketing firm Masabi US Ltd. to begin testing a smartphone application that will enable riders to purchase tickets anywhere and anytime on their phones.
Riders would “quickly and securely buy and display electronic tickets” without having to use queues at ticket machines or use cash onboard trains, Metro-North officials said in a prepared statement.
During the pilot, railroad employees will act as users and be able to download the free app to their iPhone, Android or Blackberry phones. Through the app, users can buy any type of ticket — one-way, round trip or 10-trip — with any origin and designation suing a credit or debit card.
Masabi US Ltd. also is working with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to introduce a smartphone rail ticketing system this fall.
