MTA awards Second Avenue Subway station contract

Yesterday, New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced it awarded a $301 million contract to a Skanska USA/Traylor Bros Inc. joint venture to excavate a cavern that will house the 86th Street Station, as well as build the station’s basic structure. The facility is being constructed as part of the MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) Second Avenue Subway project.
The joint venture also will install the cavern’s concrete structural lining, peform utility work and underpin existing buildings that are adjacent to the work site. Construction is scheduled to begin later this month and be complete in fall 2014.
The Second Avenue Subway project is the largest expansion of the NYCT subway system in generations, according to the MTA. The line — which will be built in four phases — will run along Second Avenue from 125th Street to the Financial District in Lower Manhattan and feature 16 stations. Scheduled to be complete in December 2016, the first phase will include stations at 72nd, 86th and 96th streets.
