The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced last week that an accessibility upgrade and station renovation project is underway at the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) station in the village of Babylon, New York.
The station is one of three included in the second LIRR Americans with Disabilities Act package; the others the Forest Hills and Hollis stations. The upgrades are part of the MTA’s 2025 to 2029 capital plan, which includes $1.2 billion to improve rail stations, Long Island Press reported.
As the terminal station on the Babylon Branch of the MTA and a connection station, the Babylon station being accessible to everyone creates a customer experience “second to none," said LIRR President Rob Free.
The project will be completed in several phases, the first of which began in early September. The western end of the platform closed, reducing the 12-car platform to six cars. In Phase 2, expected to begin in September 2025, the platform's eastern end will close and the western end will reopen.
MTA officials anticipate the entire project will be completed in May 2026.
