The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) yesterday broke ground on a Long Island Rail Road station in Yaphank, New York. The new station, a relocation of one at Ronkankoma Beach in Suffolk County, will be closer to east end highways and Brookhaven National Laboratory research facility, MTA officials said in a press release.

The existing station dates to 1844. The new station will cost $20 million to construct. Substantial completion is estimated for second-quarter 2026. Once the new station is opens, the old station will be demolished.

Improvements at the new station will include a 50-space parking lot, an integrated bus loop, a plaza with bike racks, an information and schedule hub and an intercom for requesting help on the platform.
