The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) recently announced the completion of New York City Transit's 68 Street-Hunter College station renovation, making it fully accessible. It was the ninth subway station to be made accessible in 2024.
The renovation included the addition of one new street-to-mezzanine elevator, two new mezzanine-to-platform elevators, six new stairways and nine refurbished stairways, MTA officials said in a press release. Those updates are designed to improve the flow of passengers through the station, which serves 20,000 riders daily.
Crews also created an enlarged mezzanine and new concession stand, installed new lighting and tiles, repaired defects in concrete, steel and paint, and refurbished boarding platforms to meet Americans With Disabilities Act requirements. Additional safety upgrades were implemented too, including a new fire alarm system, CCTV cameras and upgraded communication systems.
About $140 million of the $177 million project was funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
