The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) of New York announced the completed upgrade of the New Cassel substation located within the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Main Line corridor, one of several scheduled for updates.
The New Cassel substation and seven others are being replaced or upgraded in anticipation of the LIRR’s Main Line expansion, MTA officials said in a press release.
The substation's operational life was nearing its end. The upgrades will accommodate a new third track, part of the Main Line expansion, as well as future expansions, they said.
Substation replacements are part of the MTA capital program. Other substations being replaced or upgraded include those in New Hyde Park, Garden City/Garden City Park, Mineola, Carle Place, Westbury and Hicksville.
There are 104 total substations along LIRR track. The substations allow AC voltage to convert to DC voltage that is fed to the electrified rail tracks, which then propel the train via its traction motor.
