The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) yesterday launched its One Metro New York (OMNY) contactless fare payment system at the 34th Street-Penn Station in Manhattan, one of the busiest transit hubs in New York City.
The OMNY system enables riders to enter the MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) system by tapping a contactless prepaid card, mobile phone or smart watch against a payment reader.
By year's end, the MTA plans to roll out the payment system at 85 subway stations and two railway stations, MTA officials said in a press release.
The agency is on track to deploy OMNY readers at every subway station and on all NYCT-operated buses by 2020's end, and at MTA Long Island Rail Road and MTA Metro-North Railroad stations in 2021.
The MetroCard will co-exist alongside OMNY until 2023, when the project is fully implemented.
