The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced yesterday that the New York City Transit (NYCT) subway, Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Metro-North Railroad have reached pandemic ridership records.
On May 7, the MTA logged 2,239,500 trips on the NYCT, including 3,823 on the Staten Island Railway, as well as 101,600 on LIRR and 83,100 on Metro-North.
These are the highest single-day ridership totals since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York, MTA officials said in a press release.
"People are coming back, which is great news for New York City Transit,” said Sarah Feinberg, NYCT's interim president. “But we need to continue to do all we can to get back to our pre-pandemic ridership levels.”
The MTA has undertaken cleaning and disinfecting protocols in the year since the pandemic began. The authority has launched a public education campaign and issued millions of masks to its riders.
Mask usage in the system remains high, with more than 98% of customers wearing a mask when riding mass transit. The MTA also enhanced its live subway map to allow riders to find vaccination sites throughout the city.
