The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is seeking construction bids for the future extension of the Second Avenue Subway/Q Line to 125th Street in Harlem, the project's next phase.

The extension will provide transportation equity to East Harlem, one of New York City’s most transit-dependent neighborhoods, MTA officials said in a press release. Three stations will be built at 125th, 116th and 106th streets during the second phase. The 125th Street Station will offer better connectivity to several other subway lines and transit modes, MTA officials said.

The project has been under development for nearly 20 years and advanced to the engineering phase in January 2022. MTA plans to apply for grant funding from the Federal Transit Administration’s Capital Investment Grants program by year’s end, authority officials said.

Once complete, the extension will handle an estimated 300,000 riders each day, saving passengers up to 20 minutes in their commute time.
