New Jersey Transit Dec. 13 awarded Wood-Ridge, N.J.-based Terminal Construction Corp. a $25.75 million contract to construct a train yard near Hoboken Terminal, which would provide mid-day storage for 10 diesel trainsets to be used for rush hour transport.


"Expanding storage and maintenance facilities for NJ Transit trains is crucial to providing the day-to-day needs of our riders," said NJ Transit Executive Director Jeffrey Warsh in a prepared statement. "This project will allow us to substantially increase service and handle the anticipated ridership increases on the Main/Bergen, Pascack Valley and Morris & Essex lines."


Dubbed "Hoboken Yard B," the facility would include replacements of nearly 100-year-old maintenance equipment. The yard also would provide a two-lane fueling/sanding station; 765-foot inspection pit; train washer; and employee office building with lockers. To enable trains to access Hoboken Yard, NJ Transit plans to build two rail bridges over Marin Boulevard.


Construction is expected to be complete in June 2002 and would be paid for by both federal and Transportation Trust Fund dollars.
