Maryland Transit purchases passenger-rail coaches from VRE

This week, the Maryland Transit Authority took delivery of 13 double-deck commuter-rail coaches the agency purchased from the Virginia Railway Express (VRE).
Scheduled to enter service in fall, the 135-passenger coaches will be used to provide additional capacity on the MARC commuter-rail system's Penn Line.
VRE purchased the coaches from Kawasaki Rail Car Inc. in 2000. The equipment is nearly identical to the 50 double-deck coaches currently operating on the Penn Line.
