Rail News: Passenger Rail

Maryland Transit to expand MARC station, upgrade system

Yesterday, Maryland Transit Administration broke ground on a parking lot expansion at the Martin State Airport Maryland Rail Commuter (MARC) station in Baltimore County.

The agency will add 155 spaces to the current 171-space lot, which is filled to capacity. The expansion will help accommodate growing ridership at the station. Daily boardings at the facility have increased from 195 in 2003 to 205 in 2005.

MARC also recently expanded parking lots at its Edgewood, Halethorpe, Aberdeen and West Baltimore stations.

The agency is making other system improvements, too. MARC will spend $100 million to improve locomotives and passenger cars; work with CSX Transportation and Amtrak to upgrade track, signals and overhead cables; install passenger warning signals at stations passengers’ view of oncoming trains is obstructed; and build a mid-day rail car storage facility at Union Station.
