The Purple Line Transit Constructors (PLTC) last week announced its intent to exit its contract to build Maryland’s Purple light-rail line after project delays.
PLTC’s design-build agreement with the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) includes an exit clause under which PLTC may leave the project if total delays reach 365 days.
Delays have extended well beyond the 365-day threshold due to third-party lawsuits, delayed right-of-way acquisition and changes to regulations and third-party agreements, PLTC officials said in a press release.
PLTC officials said the design-build team has spent nearly three years negotiating with the MTA, and has not been granted the additional time and cost it would require to complete the project.
PLTC will work with the MTA and Purple Line Project —the lead contracting and finance consortium — to ensure an “orderly transition” within 90 days.
PLTC is comprised of Fluor Corp., The Lane Construction Corp. and Traylor Bros. Inc.
The 16-mile, 21-station Purple Line will extend from Bethesda to New Carrollton.
