Rail News: Passenger Rail
So far, so good: An N-ViroMotive™ GenSet locomotive in service at The Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Co. (MBCR) is helping the railroad reduce nitrous oxide (NOx) and particulate matter emissions, fuel usage and maintenance.
"Our field operators are impressed with the cab features, particularly the extraordinarily low internal and external noise levels, ultra low emissions and exceptional fuel efficiency," said MBCR Deputy General Manager Richard Davey in a prepared statement. "In fact, we just fueled the N-ViroMotive unit a couple weeks ago for the first time since May when we received it from NREC. For us, that translates to significant cost savings."
Produced by National Railway Equipment Co. (NREC), the three-engine, 2,100-horsepower N-ViroMotive locomotive is designed to reduce NOx emissions by 80 percent, and particulate matter emissions by 50 percent to 65 percent; and reduce fuel usage between 35 percent and 50 percent through improved tractive effort adhesion efficiency.
