The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a $20 million Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant to fund the Pace Harvey Transportation Center reconstruction project, a joint effort between Chicago commuter-rail system Metra, Pace Suburban Bus and the city of Harvey, Illinois.
The project is designed to create safer and easier transfers between Metra trains and Pace buses, as well as offer restrooms for passengers, an interior waiting area, a new retail space and better weather protection for pedestrians, Metra officials said in a joint press release. The 20-year-old facility will also become ADA-compliant.
Metra's portion of the project will involve rehabilitation of the station to better integrate with Pace’s facility. Crews will build a new station entrance, platform headhouses and waiting areas, elevators and an expanded platform with a canopy.
The transit center serves some of Illinois’ most historically disadvantaged communities, Metra officials said. The project is an intentionally inclusive economic investment of President Joe Biden's administration.
"This RAISE grant will help create a modern and comfortable transfer facility for the benefit of both Pace and Metra riders," said Metra CEO and Executive Director Jim Derwinski.
