Metra announced yesterday the addition of 18 trains (nine inbound and nine outbound) to weekday service on the Union Pacific West Line.
That change increases the total daily train count on the line from 40 to 58. The schedule revision is one of several being piloted during the post-pandemic era to deliver more consistent service to riders, Metra officials said in a press release.
The Chicago commuter railroad surveyed riders in summer about the most requested times to add trains to the line’s schedule. Trains will arrive every 10 to 25 minutes during the morning and evening rush periods, while a new express service will make limited stops to and from Glen Ellyn, Illinois, during those times. In addition, reverse commuters will now have an express service option, Metra officials said.
Midday service will operate every 60 to 90 minutes, while late night service will operate hourly.
"We are greatly encouraged by the growth in ridership so far this year and are happy that we are able to expand service on the UP West Line to provide commuters with another option as winter sets in," said Metra CEO and Executive Director Jim Derwinski.
